About the PDF Page Counter

FreeToolr's PDF Page Counter counts pages in one or many PDF files at once. It suits students, offices, publishers, print shops and anyone checking a document before submission or printing. The tool shows each file's page count, combined total, file size and page dimensions. Dimensions appear as names such as A3, A4, A5, Letter or Legal, with portrait or landscape orientation. You can also view measurements in millimetres and download the results as a CSV file. The counter reads the PDF structure rather than visible page numbers, blank pages or printed sheets. Password-protected PDFs are usually still counted. It runs in your browser, so your files are never uploaded. Results download straight to your device. Batch counting, page-size details and CSV export make it more useful than a basic one-file counter.

How to use it

  1. 1Select or drag one or more PDF files into the tool.
  2. 2Review each file's page count, dimensions, orientation and file size.
  3. 3Check the combined page total shown for all selected PDFs.
  4. 4Download the results as a CSV file when you need a copy.

Worked example

Example: You select report.pdf with 12 pages and appendix.pdf with 8 pages. The tool shows 12 and 8 by file, with a combined total of 20 pages, plus each file's dimensions and size.

How it works

TotalPages = Count(root `/Pages` node)Locate the document catalog's `/Pages` tree rootFor each `/Type /Pages` node, use its `/Kids` array and `/Count`The `/Count` value equals the number of descendant leaf pagesAn equivalent method recursively counts every leaf object whose type is `/Page`Do not count visible page-number text, thumbnails or printed sheets

What it is good for

  • Count several PDFs and see the combined total.
  • Check A4, Letter, Legal and other page sizes by file.
  • Keep files local and download a CSV record.
  • Damaged or unusual PDFs may not produce a result.
  • A password-protected PDF is usually counted, but some encrypted files may prevent reading.

Questions people ask

How do I count the pages in a PDF?

Select the PDF in FreeToolr's counter. It reads the PDF page structure and shows the total without relying on visible page-number labels.

Do blank pages and cover pages count?

Yes. A blank page or cover page counts when it exists as a page in the PDF. A page outside the file cannot be counted.

Does duplex printing halve the PDF page count?

No. A 20-page PDF remains 20 PDF pages. Duplex printing may use 10 physical sheets, but the file still contains 20 pages.

Can I count several PDFs at once?

Yes. Select multiple PDFs to see each file's count and the combined total. You can download the results as a CSV file.

Do Roman numerals change the page count?

No. Roman numerals, Arabic numbers and custom labels are page labels. They do not change the structural number of PDF pages.

Can I count a scanned PDF?

Yes, if the scanned PDF has a valid page structure. OCR is not needed for counting pages, but it is needed for text searching.

Can I count a password-protected PDF?

Password-protected PDFs are usually still counted. Some encrypted or damaged files may not allow the browser to read their page structure.
