About Print Multiple PDF Pages per Sheet

Use this browser tool to place several PDF pages on one sheet. It suits handouts, slide notes, reading copies, proofs, and documents that need fewer printed sheets. Choose 2, 4, 6, or 9 pages per sheet. Select A4 or US Letter, portrait or landscape orientation, and page order across or down. You can also add an optional thin border around each page. FreeToolr scales every page to fit its space while preserving its shape. The result is a new PDF ready to print. Your original file stays on your device because the tool runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and the finished PDF downloads directly to your device. Unlike a basic printer setting, this tool gives you a separate imposed PDF that you can save and print later.

Worked example

A 20-page PDF set to 4 pages per sheet produces 5 output pages. With A4 landscape selected, each output page contains four scaled PDF pages in a 2 by 2 layout. The source page order stays across or down, based on your selection.

How it works

Assume: Output sheet width and height: W, H Grid columns and rows: c, r Horizontal and vertical gaps: gx, gy Margins: mL, mR, mT, mB Source page effective width and height: wp, hp Number of source pages: N Pages per sheet: n = c x r Number of output sheets: sheets = ceil(N / n) Available cell size: cellW = (W - mL - mR - (c - 1)gx) / c cellH = (H - mT - mB - (r - 1)gy) / r Aspect-ratio-preserving scale: scale = min(cellW / wp, cellH / hp) Placed page size: placedW = scale x wp placedH = scale x hp Centered position for column j and row i: x = mL + j(cellW + gx) + (cellW - placedW) / 2 y = mB + i(cellH + gy) + (cellH - placedH) / 2 For PDF coordinates, 72 points = 1 inchA4 is 210 x 297 mm, about 595.28 x 841.89 pointsUS Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches, or 612 x 792 points. For rotated pages, normalize the effective page dimensions after applying the page rotationFor a 90 or 270 degree rotation, swap width and height before calculating the scale. Typical layouts: 2-up portrait pages: c = 2, r = 1, usually landscape output. 4-up: c = 2, r = 2. 6-up: c = 2, r = 3 or c = 3, r = 2. 9-up: c = 3, r = 3. Page order: Horizontal means left-to-right, then top-to-bottom. Vertical means top-to-bottom, then left-to-right

What it is good for

  • Create a separate PDF instead of changing the original file.
  • Use A4 or US Letter in portrait or landscape.
  • Keep page shape while fitting pages into each sheet.
  • The tool supports 2, 4, 6, or 9 pages per sheet, not custom page counts.
  • It creates an N-up layout, not a folded booklet or binding order.

Questions people ask

What does N-up PDF mean?

N-up means placing several original PDF pages on one output sheet. For example, 4-up places four pages on each sheet.

How do I print two PDF pages on one sheet?

Choose 2 pages per sheet, select A4 or US Letter, and set the orientation. FreeToolr creates a new PDF with two scaled pages on each output sheet.

Will the pages keep their shape?

Yes. Pages are scaled to fit their spaces while keeping their original aspect ratio. This avoids stretching the page content.

Can I use A4 and US Letter paper?

Yes. Select A4 for common European and many international printers. Select US Letter for the standard 8.5 by 11 inch paper used in the United States and Canada.

Does FreeToolr upload my PDF?

No. The tool runs in your browser, so your file is not uploaded. The finished PDF downloads straight to your device.

What is the difference between across and down order?

Across fills each row from left to right before moving to the next row. Down fills each column from top to bottom before moving to the next column.

Is this the same as booklet printing?

No. N-up printing places pages in a regular grid. Booklet printing reorders pages for folding and binding, which this tool does not do.
