About the Exponent Calculator

FreeToolr's Exponent Calculator evaluates a base raised to an exponent. It helps students, teachers, parents and anyone checking maths homework or everyday calculations. Enter the base, enter the exponent, and view the result. The calculator follows the standard meaning of powers: a positive whole-number exponent repeats multiplication, a negative exponent creates a reciprocal, and a fraction such as 1/2 represents a root. You can copy the result or share a link that reopens the calculator with your numbers. The tool runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. It uses a focused two-input layout, so you can calculate a power without entering a longer expression or opening a larger algebra solver. It works for common power calculations, including positive, negative and fractional exponents when a real result exists.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the base in the Base field.
  2. 2Enter the power in the Exponent field.
  3. 3Select the calculate control to show the Result.
  4. 4Copy the result or share the link with your numbers.

Worked example

For Base = 3 and Exponent = 4, the result is 81. The calculation is 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81.

The formula

b to the power e means b multiplied by itself e timesA negative exponent gives 1 / b^e; a fraction like 1/2 gives a root

What it is good for

  • Uses separate Base and Exponent fields.
  • Runs in your browser with no upload.
  • Lets you copy the result and share your calculation.
  • A fractional exponent on a negative base may not have a real-number result.
  • This calculator evaluates a power, rather than solving for an unknown base or exponent.

Questions people ask

What is an exponent?

An exponent tells you how many times to use a base as a factor. In 4^3, 4 is the base and 3 is the exponent.

What is 2^5?

2^5 equals 32. The calculation is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32.

What does a negative exponent mean?

A negative exponent gives a reciprocal. For example, 2^-3 equals 1 / 2^3, which equals 1/8.

What does a fractional exponent mean?

A fractional exponent represents a root. For example, 27^(1/3) means the cube root of 27, which is 3.

Why is -4^2 different from (-4)^2?

The exponent applies before a leading minus sign. So -4^2 equals -16, while (-4)^2 equals 16.

Can I calculate a power with a zero exponent?

Any nonzero base raised to the zero power equals 1. The expression 0^0 needs context, so check the convention used in your maths problem.
